The line art, and one way of colouring it — using the 12 colours below.

What is on the page

A humpback whale and her calf swim together through a shaft of sunlight that falls from the water's surface. Both are drawn with the long throat grooves and knobbled snout of the species, and the parent's fluke reaches into the top corner of the page. Small fish drift in loose groups around them, bubbles rise in scattered circles, and the seabed below is a band of kelp fronds, rounded stones, coral fans and tube sponges. Fine ruled lines run down the page for the sunbeams.

Colouring it

Large, open shapes — good for younger hands.

The sunbeam lines are the interesting problem: colour between them in two slightly different blues and the light reads as real. Whales take grey, but the underside grooves are a chance to go warmer. The seabed strip at the bottom is the detailed part of an otherwise open drawing, so it suits being the place you slow down and use several greens at once.

The palette

Every page in Imagine & Color ships with a palette chosen for that drawing. These are the 12 colours for Gentle Whale, with the names they carry in the app — useful whether you are colouring on an iPad or matching pencils on paper.
